Kings Theatre Regeneration Starts on Site
Works are advancing on site at Kings Theatre in Portsmouth, as the Victorian terrace at 24-28 Albert Road is carefully dismantled in a key milestone for the theatre's long-awaited regeneration.
In a technically demanding operation, the structure is being methodically taken apart from within while its historic facade is retained in place. This conservation-led approach protects the Albert Road streetscape while making way for a new hybrid glulam and steel framed structure to rise behind it, bringing three long-derelict shop units into the theatre's footprint for the first time in the building's history.
Pritchard Architecture, developed the proposals in close collaboration with the Kings Theatre Trust, working alongside Portsmouth City Council, Historic England, and the Theatres Trust to balance the demands of a Grade II* listed Edwardian building with the needs of a modern, accessible public venue.
Once complete, the transformed terrace will provide a new publicly accessible entrance on Albert Road, expanded bar facilities, studio and rehearsal space, and a lift serving all levels. A generous rooflight and double-height volume will draw natural light deep into the theatre's northern edge, while repair and conservation works progress on the original northern elevation and the iconic entrance portico at the corner of Albert Road.
The twelve-month construction programme is on track, with completion expected in early 2027.
