A New Conservation Management Plan for Fort Cumberland
Pritchard Architecture have been selected by Historic England to prepare a new Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for Fort Cumberland. This will serve as a forward-looking, strategic document, structured as a Framework Conservation Plan that can guide Historic England in making informed, sustainable decisions about the site's future conservation, enhancement, and use.
Fort Cumberland is an exceptionally significant and complex site. It is not only a Scheduled Monument and a Grade II*/II listed collection of buildings, but also a rare example of an 18th–19th century bastioned fort that remains largely intact. As such, the CMP will address both the layered historic significance of the site and the immediate practical challenges associated with its current condition, management, and re-use.
As part of our bid, we recognised that the site presents a range of heritage values - military, architectural, archaeological, ecological, and social, that must be fully understood and balanced within a realistic, adaptable management framework.
Our team is uniquely positioned to deliver the Fort Cumberland CMP due to a combination of extensive heritage sector experience, in-house accredited conservation expertise, and long-standing involvement with the site itself. The relevance and calibre of our prior work, including complex CMPs, strategic reuse planning, and Scheduled Monument experience underpins every aspect of our proposed approach.
