Completion of New Visitor Toilets at Boathouse 5, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

We’re pleased to announce the successful completion of a new visitor toilet facility at Boathouse 5 in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, delivered on behalf of Portsmouth Historic Quarter.

The project provides much needed visitor amenities near the main entrance of the dockyard, with new male, female, accessible WCs, a parent room, and baby change facilities. These new facilities are accessible both from outside the building and internally, allowing use during events and exhibitions held within Boathouse 5.

The works involved the careful removal of internal partitions and doors from the 1984 Mary Rose Exhibition fit-out, sensitively adapting this part of the historic building while preserving its character. A new glazed entrance has been introduced to the southernmost bay of the building’s front elevation, improving visibility and access, while interior finishes reference the existing material palette, including timber boarding to echo the building’s original detailing.

We’re especially pleased to see interpretation of the dockyard’s heritage thoughtfully integrated into the design, helping to tell the story of this important historic site to all who visit.
