Jane Austen’s House Museum – Phase Two Starts On Site

Jane Austen’s House is a Grade I listed building in Chawton, Hampshire. It was home to the author for the last eight years of her life and is where she wrote and published all six of her novels. The site was opened as a museum in 1949 and now has around forty thousand visitors a year.

Phase One of the project was completed in April 2022 and involved a full roof replacement of the main house, including roof structure repairs, dormer window and chimney repairs, and repairs to the rainwater goods, including internal and valley gutters.

Now underway, Phase Two of the project involves a full roof replacement of the Grade II listed outbuildings, with new handmade clay roof tiles. The project also includes increasing the size of rainwater goods to cope with the effects of climate change, adding internal insulation to the Cart Shed to make the space inhabitable, and the replacement of timber bifold doors to improve visitor flow. The construction phase has just begun, with work starting on site this week and due to complete in the spring.
